Baku-APA. The Ukrainian parliament on Tuesday approved a package of laws aimed at preventing and combating corruption in governmental bodies, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The legislation, proposed by the cabinet last month, is designed to root out bribery and abuse-of-power in the post-Soviet country through enhanced supervision over public servants, judiciary and law-enforcement officials and their families.

With 284 lawmakers present in the voting, the 298-seat assembly agreed to implement the landmark anti-corruption strategy for 2014-2017 in Ukraine.

Separately, the lawmakers passed a bill to establish an anti-corruption body to investigate and prosecute corruption cases committed by Ukrainian politicians and civil servants.

The parliament also backed the establishment of an independent anti-corruption committee to verify income sources of politicians and civil servants and monitor their lifestyle to prevent corruption at the local level.

In addition, the parliament adopted a bill to set up an online database in which public servants' property ownership information can be searched.

Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko pledged to immediately sign the anti-corruption legislation into the law once the parliament approved it.

According to local analysts, corruption is currently a major challenge for Ukrainian leadership, as it deters investors and undermines the authority of the government.

In a global index of perceived official corruption released by Transparency International, Ukraine ranked 144th among 177 countries worldwide.
