Deniz Baykal, the former main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader and Antalya deputy, was hospitalized late on Oct. 16 in the capital Ankara, APA reported citing Hurriyet Daily News.

The initial medical examinations at a private hospital showed Baykal had suffered from severe influenza, after which he was transferred to Ankara University’s İbn-i Sina Hospital.

The party’s former deputy leader Yılmaz AteÅŸ told reporters on Oct. 16 that Baykal was not in critical condition and his treatment has been ongoing at the hospital.

He added Baykal had been diagnosed with vascular occlusion after complaints of influenza.

Meanwhile, President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan called Ankara University rector Professor Erkan İbiÅŸ to be briefed about Baykal’s condition, according to presidential sources.
