Baku – APA. The election of a new president of the European Parliament is due to take place on January 17, RIA Novosti reported.
On November 24, European Parliament President Martin Schulz said he would run for election to the German parliament next year, instead of seeking a third term in his EU post. He will be the top candidate of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) in the industrial, densely populated North Rhine-Westphalia region.
Political factions in the European Parliament will put forward their candidates for the post of president in December. There are 10 potential candidates including, Manfred Weber, Chairman of the EPP Group, Gianni Pittella, president of Socialists and Democrats Group and Guy Verhofstadt, Chairman of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe.
