Baku-APA. British Ministry of Defense (MoD) confirmed on Monday that a soldier serving in Afghanistan was killed on Dec. 23, bringing Britain's death toll in the country to 447, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defense must announce that a soldier from the Royal Engineers was killed in Afghanistan on 23 December 2013," said the MoD in a statement.

The serviceman was killed in action as a result of enemy fire whilst on operations east of Kabul.

The MoD said that a total of 447 British forces personnel or MOD civilians had died while serving in Afghanistan since the start of operations in October 2001.

Of these, 404 were killed as a result of hostile action, and 43 are known to have died either as a result of illness, non-combat injuries or accidents, or have not yet officially been assigned a cause of death pending the outcome of an investigation.

Currently, Britain has around 5,200 British troops based in Afghanistan. The country has announced plans to withdraw troops in Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
