Baku-APA. A dozen people, including one police officer, were injured on Saturday when supporters of rival political factions fought with each other in northern Serbia, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
According to the Radio Television Serbia (RTS), 14 people were arrested as divided political factions in the northern Serbian town of Bac struggled over control of the local municipal government.
The incident began overnight in Bac, about 150 km northwest of Belgrade, when a group of supporters of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) forced out the recently appointed president and vice-president of the municipal assembly from their offices.
A fight broke out when a second group of about 20 supporters of the Democratic Party (DS) attempted to breach the doors of the municipal building to allow for the return of the ejected officials.
In the meantime, about 150 citizens gathered to protest the excessive measures used by local police that resulted in the dozen injuries.
The current municipal government was formed on Nov. 29, 2012, after a municipal councilor with the SNS crossed the floor to join the DS, giving it a majority.
The SNS and their Socialist coalition partners complained the action was illegal and also launched a legal challenge to the formation of the recent municipal government.
