European countries are considering the possibility of paying a fee for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, provided it is voluntary, APA reports citing the British newspaper The Guardian.

According to her, European capitals believe that payment of the fee should be voluntary and regulated by the UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO). Europe is proposing to use the situation in the Strait of Malacca as a model: transit through this waterway is free, but countries and private corporations make voluntary contributions to special funds that help coastal states offset the costs of patrolling the strait and ensuring environmental safety there.

According to The Guardian, a similar proposal was developed by Oman in collaboration with British lawyers. The newspaper noted that Omani authorities are prepared to send their legal experts to Tehran for detailed discussions of the plan.
