Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Sunday announced the Government would adopt a law on banning participants of a rally, as well as counter-rally, covering their faces “with various means”, in response to the ongoing public protests against the Government's decision to suspend EU accession talks until 2028, APA reports citing Agenda Georgia.

“Such laws operate in numerous European Union countries. This is a very important law that will contribute to the prevention of violence at gatherings”, Kobakhidze said, adding they would make “technical preparations” in a way to adopt the law by the end of next week and fully enforce it till the end of December.

The PM claimed the law enforcement officers had to “endure severe physical and psychological violence” at the rallies, citing the name-callings in their directions such as “blackshirts” and “Russian OMON [special Russian police units] by certain political forces and media outlets, and describing it as “disgraceful” and “the expression of double standards”.

“If anyone proves to be European on Rustaveli Avenue , these are the heroic police officers and would like to thank them for their patience”, the head of the Government stressed.

Kobakhidze added more than ten police officers had to undergo surgery and “numerous” cases of injuries were reported as well regarding the violence on law enforcement, which “elicited no condemnation”.
