Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the “presidential elections” held today in the country's occupied South Ossetia (Tskhinvali) region, APA's local bureau reports.
Official Tbilisi described the “elections” as illegal, stating that they contradict the fundamental norms and principles of international law.
In a statement, the ministry noted that the “elections” could neither legitimize the occupation regime nor change the international legal status of the Tskhinvali region as an integral part of Georgia.
Official Tbilisi also strongly condemned Russia's decision to hold elections to the Russian State Duma in the occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions from September 18 to 20.
“The opening and operation of Russian polling stations on Georgia's sovereign territory without the consent of the Georgian government constitutes yet another gross violation of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as another clear manifestation of Russia's policy aimed at the de facto annexation of Georgian regions,” the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry called on the international community to appropriately assess and strongly condemn Russia's illegal actions and ensure a corresponding international legal and political response.
