Only foreign citizens over the age of 18 will be registered as international observers during elections in Georgia, APA’s local bureau reports.

The lawmakers from the ruling Georgian Dream party have drafted amendments to the country’s Election Code in this regard.

The co-author of the bill, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on Procedural Issues, Davit Matikashvili, stated that when an international observer is not a Georgian citizen, they will demonstrate a more politically impartial approach.

The procedure for registering an interpreter accompanying an international observer will also be determined by law.

The Committee on Procedural Issues supported the bill in its first reading.

Until now, local citizens were also represented in the observation missions of international organizations during elections held in Georgia.
