Two foreign nationals have been detained in Kutaisi, Georgia, for attempting to illegally purchase nuclear and radioactive substances, the State Security Service of Georgia announced during a briefing, APA’s local bureau reports.
The individuals had planned to purchase uranium nuclear material and the radioactive substance Cesium-137 for 3 million US dollars and to illegally transport them to the territory of another country.
It was established that in recent weeks, the foreign nationals had been regularly traveling to Georgia and had actively participated in creating favorable conditions for the acquisition and transportation of the nuclear and radioactive materials as part of their criminal plan.
It was noted that such substances could be used for various crimes, including terrorist purposes.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
