The United Kingdom has approved a US request to use its military bases to strike missile depots in Iran, it was announced by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a video message published on X, APA reports.
"The only way to stop the threat is to destroy the missiles at their launch sites, in storage facilities, or the launchers used to launch them. The United States has requested permission to use British bases for this specific and limited defensive purpose. We have decided to approve this request to prevent Iran from launching missiles throughout the region," he said.
Starmer clarified that the UK itself would not join the American strikes. "We were not involved in the initial strikes on Iran. And we will not join in offensive action now," he emphasized. The prime minister added that the UK had learned its lesson from the misguided military campaign in Iraq.
According to Starmer, the decision to grant Washington the right to use British military bases for strikes against Iran was dictated by the need to stop Tehran's attacks on neighboring Middle Eastern countries, where approximately 200,000 British citizens live. "Our partners in the Gulf have asked us to do more to protect them," he said. "The basis of our decision is the collective self-defense of long-standing friends and allies and the protection of British citizens. This is in line with international law."
