Of the 300 members of the Electoral College that will determine Georgia's new president, 211 are members of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, APA's Tbilisi correspondent reports.
According to him, for the first time in Georgia's history, presidential elections will be held indirectly, similar to the U.S.-Germany system, where an electoral college elects the president.
“The college consists of 300 members, 150 of whom are members of the Georgian Parliament. The remaining 150 members are appointed based on the following principle: 21 members from the Adjara Supreme Council, 20 members from the Abkhazian Supreme Council, and 109 members who represent city councils, distributed proportionally according to the results of previous elections. Of the 300 members of the Electoral College, 211 are from ‘Georgian Dream,’ 69 are from the opposition, and 20 are members of the Abkhazian Supreme Council.”
The Speaker noted that the voting will take place tomorrow from 09:00 to 14:00 in the parliamentary session hall, and the process will be overseen by the Central Election Commission (CEC). The voting will be open.
Note that the ruling "Georgian Dream" has nominated 53-year-old Mikheil Kavlashvili for this position. The current president, Salome Zurabishvili, has stated that the elections are illegitimate and, for this reason, she will remain president.
