Baku-APA. Northern Ireland’s deputy first minister Martin McGuinness has said the British government must face an independent inquiry if the Northern state is ever to gain true peace, APA reports quoting Press TV.

McGuinness announced on Monday 1 October, "Unfortunately, to date, the British state has refused to acknowledge its role as a participant in the conflict. I believe it is insulting to the victims and insulting to people’s intelligence.”

Northern Ireland’s deputy first minister said that the state’s peace process has “become a beacon of hope for conflict resolutions across the globe, far more needs to be done to tackle sectarianism”.

McGuinness spoke to The Independent explaining that the UK government must accept that the best way to deal with the process is to come forward for an international, independent tribunal of inquiry.

This comes after three nights of violence took place in the north of Belfast at the beginning of September. The unrest included a showdown of anger between Protestants and Catholics. The violence led to the injuries of 60 police officers during the unrest, as petrol bombs and bricks were thrown at them.

McGuinness mentioned that the “the very generous comments” made by British Prime Minister David Cameron in the “aftermath of the Bloody Sunday tribunal”, is not enough to achieve true peace in the UK’s northern state.
