Parliamentary elections start in Georgia

The elections will be held in 73 constituencies and 3719 polling stations. According to the Georgian Central Election Commission, 3,613,551 voters including those in abroad, will participle in the elections. In general, the polling stations have been organized in 44 cities of 37 countries.

New parliament will include 150 members elected due to proportional and majority systems. Two electoral blocs and 14 parties have been registered for participation in the elections. 2805 candidates are struggling for150 seats. Electoral barrier for parties have been defined at 5% of the votes.

The main struggle is expected between the ruling party “United National Movement” and the electoral bloc “Georgian dream” led by Bidzina Ivanishvili. 60 000 local and international observers will supervise the elections. The reason of such serious monitoring is that Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili is going to conclude his term as a president in 2013. According to the new constitutional norms, the authorities of prime minister in Georgia will be increased by means of reducing president’s authorities. And the party or electoral bloc, which will win in the elections, will put candidacy of its representative for the prime minister next year.
