Baku-APA. Milo Djukanovic, the prime minister of Montenegro, has resigned but will continue his carrier as the leader of the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists, APA reports quoting Press TV.

“Now when Montenegro is a stable country, when it is at the doors of European Union and NATO... the conditions have been met for my withdrawal,” Djukanovic told reporters, days after the Balkans state was given the formal status as a European Union candidate.

"I have estimated that by such a move conditions are met for a change in the government without any shock and consequences for further successful development [of Montenegro],” he added.

Now President Filip Vujanovic should officially propose a candidate for premiership to the parliament.

Djukanovic said the DPS has decided to suggest Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Igor Luksic to lead the new government as prime minister.

Since the ruling DPS has the majority seats in the parliament, the 34-year old Luksic will possibly succeed Djukanovic.

As a pioneer of Montenegro’s independence, the 48-year old Djukanovic has already been prime minister five times and was president for a term.
