Polish president proposes changes to constitution

Baku-APA. Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski on Friday announced he would direct a draft of changes to the Polish Constitution linked with Poland’s EU membership, APA reports quoting Xinhua News Agency.

The document may be defined as "Poland in Europe," noted the president at a press conference.

Komorowski proposed the introduction to the constitution of an entire new chapter devoted to Poland’s role in the EU. The draft includes, among others, rules to come in force after Poland joins the euro zone concerning the organization of the National Bank of Poland, including the future liquidation of the Monetary Policy Council.

Changes also assume the possibility of voting in elections to the European Parliament by Poles living in other EU countries. The draft also includes principles of adoption of Poland’s stands to be later presented at the EU forum.

"These regulations are, on the one hand, confirm our EU membership and fully reflect it in the constitution, on the other hand these are regulations which are to facilitate the practical implementation of the Lisbon Treaty," said Komorowski.

The president stressed that the draft includes regulations which are to help Poland in its participation in the deepening of European integration processes, with special consideration given to entries concerning the central bank in perspective of Poland’s entry of the euro zone.

Komorowski also announced he would present, in the near future, a successive legislative initiative linked with the deepening of local self-government reform. He said the now drafted document assumes the election of councillors at all levels in single seat election districts.
