PACE President remains deeply concerned over Ashtiani case in Iran

Strasbourg – APA. “I wish to add my voice to those calling on Iran not to execute Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani,†Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), said today in a statement, APA reports quoting PACE web-page.
“While fears of an immediate execution now seem to have lessened, I am deeply concerned that her life remains under threat.â€
“I note Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki’s reported statement today that a final verdict in Ashtiani’s case has not yet been reached, and once again appeal for her release.â€
“The Council of Europe is resolutely opposed to the death penalty, and no executions take place in our 47 member states, three of which border Iran. Executing Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani would only take Iran further away from Europe, and I ask the authorities not to take this step.â€
