In its medium-term gas market forecast for the period up to 2030, the International Energy Agency (IEA) once again lowered its estimate for global gas demand growth in 2025 to less than 1% from the previously expected 1.3%, APA reports.

However, a new consumption record is still expected in 2026.

The agency's preliminary data indicate that natural gas demand for the first nine months of 2025 increased by just 0.5% (or approximately 10 billion cubic meters), primarily in Europe and North America. This was driven by higher gas prices, increased macroeconomic uncertainty, and limited market supply.

"Global gas demand growth is projected to slow through 2025, from 2.8% in 2024 to less than 1% in 2025. Demand in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to increase by less than 1% compared to 2024, the weakest growth since 2022," the report states. Therefore, gas demand in 2025 could reach 4.29 trillion cubic meters, compared to 4.25 trillion cubic meters in 2024.

Moreover, in 2026, according to the IEA, demand growth will accelerate to 2%, resulting in global gas consumption reaching a new record of 4.37 trillion cubic meters.

"Global LNG trade is forecast to increase by 7% (or 40 billion cubic meters), driven primarily by the United States, Canada, and Qatar. Improved supply is expected to support demand growth, particularly in fast-growing and price-sensitive Asian markets. Natural gas demand in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to increase by nearly 5% in 2026, accounting for about half of global gas demand growth," the report notes.
