AzerEnerji probes Iran-Armenian hydropower plant project in Azerbaijanâ€™s land

The use of water resources and construction of hydropower plants on the boundary rivers have to be based on bilateral agreements and international instruments in accordance with the consent and the interests of the parties, Azerbaijanâ€™s AzerEnerji said in a comment on rumors that Iran and Armenia intend to build so-called Khodaafarin Hydropower Plant and and Giz Qalasi Hydrosystem on the Araz River in Azerbaijanâ€™s Jabrail region occupied by Armenia.
The company said that it did not have exact information on the joint projects to be allegedly realized in Azeri territory and will investigate the fact.
â€œIf this fact is confirmed, the Government of Azerbaijan will take action through the appropriate channelsâ€, said the company in a statement.
Saleh Mammadov, Chief Engineer AzerEnerji, told APA-Economics that geological survey work on the construction of Khodaafarin Hydropower Plant and and Giz Qalasi Hydrosystem on the Araz River were launched by Azerbaijan in 1980s but stopped after Armenian occupation.
Mehr News Agency quoted Iranian First Vice President Parviz Davoudi as saying Iran allocated 125 million euros for the implementation of Khodaafarin and Qiz Qalasi projects.
The governmentâ€™s economic commission agreed to pay 85 million and 40 million euros for the projects respectively, the Mehr News Agency reported.
