The President said that about 4 years ago - in November 2010 the foundation for this port was laid: "The aim was that Azerbaijan could use transit opportunities fully. We certainly needed a new large commercial port, and the state has allocated large investments for this purpose. The entire infrastructure built here was made possible by the state budget, which once again proves that we have very specific programs, plans related to the development of our country, including the transport sector.
We consistently provide these plans and existing transport infrastructure in Azerbaijan provides our transport security. We completely ensure our energy security and take part in ensuring the energy security of other countries. Two days ago in Baku, a historic event - the foundation was laid for the Southern Gas Corridor. Energy security is, of course, the national security issue of any country. As a result of consistent activity in this area we have fully ensured energy security of Azerbaijan, now for decades it will bring both material and political dividends to our country at the same time. Azerbaijan will actively play its role as the country ensuring the energy security of Europe. Currently, we are actively working to ensure food security and we can say, we provide basic foodstuffs and export opportunities are created. In short, it is time to ensure our transport security."
Ilham Aliyev noted that active work is done for many years in this direction: "The opening of this port is also a part of this great work. Today, the first part of the first stage of this major port was put into operation. The next year, the first stage will be completed. Freight capacity of this port will be 25 million tons of cargo and 1 million containers. It means that Alat port is the largest commercial port on the Caspian Sea. With the construction of this port, at the same time we will further deepen the cooperation in the Caspian Sea. "
