Police has confirmed that a gunman has been killed inside the parliament building, saying they are looking for possible more suspects.
Shots were fired at three separate locations, local media said.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is advising people to stay away from area of the Canadian parliament and people in downtown Ottawa to stay away from windows and off of roofs, according to the Canadian TV (CTV) Wednesday.
CTV footage showed that inside Parliament, police officers are running down the empty halls of the Hall of Honour as shots can be heard ringing out in the background.
Parliament member Tony Clement tweeted that at least 30 shots were heard from inside the building, close to where the Conservatives and the Liberals hold their weekly caucus meetings.
Jason MacDonald, director of communications for Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, tweeted that Harper is safe and has left the area. Harper's office is across from the parliament.
The shootings came two days after a man attacked two Canadian soldiers in Quebec, Canada. One of those soldiers died from his injuries. The suspect was shot and killed by police.
On Tuesday, Canada raised the domestic terror threat level from low to medium after six Canadian CF-18 hornet fighters departed for the Middle East to join in military strike against the Islamic state ofIraq and Syria forces.
