Baku - APA. Mr. Jagland’s statement shows that he has no detailed information about the essence of the incident, the attitude of the Azerbaijani government towards the incident, the work done in this regard, even whom the incident is related with. I think that such kinds of statements of Jagland won’t be needed after he familiarizes with the work done by Azerbaijani government in this regard.
Azerbaijani president's aide for public and political affairs, Ali Hasanov made the remarks while commenting on Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland’s statement regarding the death of journalist Rasim Aliyev, the employee of Ann.az website.
A.Hasanov recalled that President Ilham Aliyev expressed his serous concern over the death of the journalist, and assessed it as a danger and threat to freedom of speech and media and free activity of mass media outlets in the country. “The head of state took the investigation under his personal supervision and instructed relevant bodies to thoroughly investigate the case, find and bring the perpetrators to justice. Mr. President said he will keep the issue of ensuring freedom of speech and information, independence of media and especially safety of journalists under his control,” he said.
According to Ali Hasanov, the Republican Prosecutor General’s Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs have taken prompt actions so as to investigate the cause of the reporter’s death and to bring the criminal to justice, and the public has been given detailed information about the matter.
“As for issues of violence against reporters and their death, I have to say that experience shows no country is guaranteed from this sport of crimes. What’s important is that the government should assess the incident properly, the issue should be investigated in an unbiased way, the criminals be brought to justice, and a strong will be displayed and necessary action be taken for similar cases not to be repeated in future. The government of Azerbaijan has done all of these. And the public welcome and support these actions,” said Ali Hasanov.
Hasanov said that there is a very good dialogue between government and civil society institutions - non-governmental organizations, political parties, mass media outlets and institutions representing religious and national minorities in Azerbaijan. “Regular meetings between representatives of the government and the civil society institutions, discussions of the issues of concern to society and joint efforts to solve the problems clearly confirm it. Azerbaijani authorities have properly fulfilled its duties for the development of civil society so far and intends to continue its efforts in this direction in the future,” he said.
