A Working Group established to analyze proposal on extension of presidential term

Baku. Elbrus Seyfullayevâ€“APA. A working Group was established for analysis of proposal on lifting of constitutional restrictions on election of one person as president for more than twice, said Chairman of the Parliamentâ€™s Standing Commission on Legal Policy and State-Building Ali Huseynov, APA reports. Chief of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) Office Safa Mirzayev, department chief of the Parliament Latif Huseynov, Chairman of standing commission Ali Huseynov and other lawmakers were involved in the Working Group. Ali Huseynov said the bill on referendum about the Constitutional changes and amendments covered strengthening and extension of human rights guarantee, strengthening of respect to the national symbols, extension of parliament terms and other issues.
The preliminary draft includes amendments and changes to 29 articles of the Constitution.

Huseynov said YAP proposal on lifting of constitutional restrictions on election of one person for more than twice would also be discussed. The commission chairman noted that on December 17, Speaker Ogtay Asadov proposed to prolong presidential term in a case of war if military operations make the presidential elections impossible. Huseynov said the final decision would be made after the discussions.
Chairwoman of the Standing Commission on Human Rights Rabiyyat Aslanova said the changes and amendments were very progressive. â€œIt should be accepted like Constitutional reformsâ€.

YAP Executive Secretary, member of the Parliament Ali Ahmadov said their proposal was contributing to the protection of democracy and voters rights. â€œIntroducing our thoughts as an anti-democratic example is a political demagogyâ€.

Member of the Parliament Gudrat Hasanguliyev said he also supported the Constitutional reforms. â€œHowever the issue should not be resolved in haste. It needed to hold consultations with the political partiesâ€.

The lawmaker proposed to make amendment, which enables the party winning majority of votes in the parliamentary elections to form the government and the parties getting fewer votes to participate in the forming of the government.
