Nizami Jafarov: Special law on names and surnames can be adopted in Azerbaijan

Baku. Kamala Guliyeva â€“ APA. â€œAcademic studies have been made concerning names and surnames. There are some initial studies. The issue on surname endings will be completely solved soon,â€ chairman of the parliamentâ€™s committee for culture Nizami Jafarov said, APA reports. He said Azerbaijanâ€™s Cabinet of Ministers is working on it.
â€œDetailed studies are being made concerning names and surnames. Every approach, tendency, interest is taken into consideration,â€ he said.

Nizami Jafarov said there are some problems concerning surnames.
â€œSometimes, our people say this issue should be completed in the short run. But this is a complicated process. Even if a small part of the society does not agree to it, it should be reviewed. If someone says that he does not want to change the surname ending â€œovâ€, â€œyevâ€, we can not object to it. This should be related to every Azerbaijani not only as a law, not also as a life style. If this is a law, it will be related only to the Republic of Azerbaijan. There are a lot of Azerbaijanis all over the world. We should find methods so that they are accepted for the Azerbaijani conscience. After the Cabinet of Ministers passes a special decision regarding this issue, we can adopt the law on â€œNames and surnamesâ€. The issue regarding names, surnames can not solved only by the order,â€ he said.

Chairman of the committee said in stead of applying compulsory methods, the independence regarding the surname endings should be enhanced.
â€œLet 5 -10 percent people preserve â€œovâ€, â€œyevâ€ surname endings. But I am sure that 80 percent of the Azerbaijanis preserve their surnames, not because they want it. These are technical matters, not special love for these surname endings. But a lot of documents are required from legal aspect. Sometimes, we are appealed concerning the changing of the surname endings. When a person aged 30-40 changes his/her surname, all the documents must be changed,â€ he said.
