Azerbaijan marks National Day of Flag for the first time

The present national flag, a memory of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) was approved by the government of ADR on November 9, 1918 and considering this fact, the National Day of Flag is declared on November 9.

On December 4, 2009, Azerbaijani Parliament adopted a draft law on amendments to the Labor Code and declared November 9 as non-working day.

The Ministerial Council of ADR passed decision about the national flag on November 9, 1918 signed by chairman of the Council Fathali Khan Khoyski. “Green-red-blue tricolor with white crescent and eight-pointed star is approved as the national flag”, said the council. Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan declared the tricolor and crescent-star flag as the national flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan on February 5, 1991.

On September 1, 2010, National Flag Square was inaugurated in a solemn ceremony in Baku. President Ilham Aliyev issued an order about the construction of the National Flag Square on November 17, 2007 and it was founded on December 30, 2007 in the territory of Bayil settlement of Baku near the Naval Base. President Ilham Aliyev attended the foundation ceremony. This place allowed the National Flag to be seen from different parts of the capital. The national flag with a 162 meter-high flagpole measures 70 meters high x 35 meters wide and weighs 350 kilos. The National Flag of 162-meter altitude, 70 meter length and 35 meter width will be installed in 2450 square-meter area of
20000 square-meter square. Gold-plate bronze national symbol of the Republic of Azerbaijan, text of the national anthem and Azerbaijan’s map were installed in the square. The National Flag Museum was established there.
