UNESCO, as an organization, is exposed to certain political manipulations during the implementation of conventions due to growing tendencies of politicization, Azerbaijan’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Elman Abdullayev, said during the panel discussion titled “The Role of Culture in the System of International Relations,” held within the framework of the “Culture and Law: Modern Challenges Forum,” APA reports.
According to the diplomat, the implementation mechanisms in UNESCO Conventions are significantly weak and, in some cases, nearly nonexistent: "On the other hand, the increasing trend of politicization within the organization leads to certain negative consequences. There are gaps in UNESCO’s mechanisms for sending missions to countries."
Elman Abdullayev added that cultural heritage matters must be kept entirely separate from political objectives and should unequivocally maintain a humanitarian character.
