In an interview with APA, Sabina Hajiyeva, Head of the State Service for the Protection, Development, and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, discussed plans for adding Azerbaijani monuments to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Hajiyeva stated that work is ongoing to inscribe the country’s historical monuments on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. A few years ago, nominations such as the “Khudafarin Bridges” and the “Azikh and Taghlar Caves – Prehistoric Sites of Azerbaijan,” both located in the Karabakh region, were included in UNESCO’s Tentative List.

Last year, Azerbaijan also submitted the “Ancient City of Gabala” and the “Gamigaya and Goygol Historical, Cultural, and Natural Complex” for inclusion in the Tentative List. With these additions, the total number of Azerbaijani monuments on UNESCO’s Tentative List has reached ten.

Hajiyeva emphasized that efforts are ongoing to move each of these sites from the Tentative List to the official World Heritage List.
