Baku. Victoria Dementyeva–APA. “We are ready to conduct monitoring of historical and cultural monuments in Azerbaijan and Armenia after the agreement with the governments of both countries”, Robert Palmer, Director of Council of Europe Directorate of Culture, Cultural and Natural Heritage told APA. He said in August, the CE Secretary General put forward important initiative for monitoring of cultural monuments, but they have not received response yet. “An expert group will be sent to the region to estimate situation of cultural monuments after positive response is received from the governments. They will be independent experts invited by the Council of Europe”.
Palmer said any cultural heritage should be protected whenever it is. “Council of Europe has certain attitude to the cultural heritage of any country. These are common resources and belong to the humankind not depending where these are. Council of Europe continues its steps toward protection of this heritage, but it needs in co-operation with the governments to fulfill it. If the governments agree, Council of Europe is ready to take responsibility and to send experts to eliminate the results of destruction”.
