Baku hosts international conference “Historical Islamic cities and modern architecture”

Baku. Ulkar Gasimova – APA. International conference “Historical Islamic cities and modern architecture” has started in Museum Center today, APA reports. The conference is organized by Culture and Tourism Ministry and Research Centre for Islamic History, Art, and Culture (IRCICA). IRCICA Director General Halit Eren, representative of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) Zeki Aslan, Culture and Tourism Minister Abulfas Garayev and others addressed the conference.

Abulfas Garayev said a number of international events will be held in Baku to promote Islamic culture in 2009 and preserve Islamic cultural heritage.
“Historical cities of Islamic countries have existed for centuries. These cities have preserved their historicity, uniqueness. Social, economic situation, new technologies improve architecture, town planning, sometimes the structure of the cities needs changing. Much attention should be paid to the historical atmosphere of cities, preservation of their historical and architectural heritage. Historical cities exist and should exist,” he said.
Abulfas Garayev also said that the aim of the conference is to preserve architectural heritage, historical environment in historical Islamic cities, study the influence of the new development, modern architecture and town planning on this environment, exchange experience in this field. Experts from Azerbaijan, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, UK and Lithuania attended the conference.
