Armenia attempts to compensate population reduction by repatriation

Baku. Anakhanum Hidayatova – APA. “The number of Armenians is too low, it could not be worse. This is not only the problem of the state - this is our common problem, and we have to create proper atmosphere,” said the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan at the meeting with the voters in Alaverdi, APA reports.

Commenting on the problem of migration Serzh Sargsyan noted that repatriation should be the priority task for the coming five years.

According to the National Statistical Service of the Republic of Armenia the number of able-bodied people comprises 11.5 % of the total population of country. The UN assesses that if this figure is higher than 7-8 %, it means the aging process in that country.

Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said that one of the main reasons of the problem is the low birth rate, the other is the departure of 1.2 mln people over the past 20 years.
