Heavy rains in Dagestan at the end of March and the beginning of April this year have led to disastrous consequences, APA’s Russia bureau reports.

As a result of the natural disaster, 6 people were killed, thousands of homes were destroyed, and significant damage was caused to infrastructure.

Rainfall on March 28–29 led to extreme consequences in several districts of Dagestan, destroying homes and roads. Residents were left without electricity. By April 1, authorities declared a local state of emergency in the republic’s largest cities, including Makhachkala, Buynaksk, Dagestanskiye Ogni, Kaspiysk, Khasavyurt, as well as in Derbent and three districts of the republic. People left homeless were relocated to hotels and provided with food.

Due to the failure of flooded power stations, about 500,000 people were left without electricity for several days.

Continuous rains caused numerous collapses and destruction on roads across the Republic of Dagestan.

Mudflows mixed with rainwater entered drinking water sources. Rospotrebnadzor recommended that residents of Makhachkala, Kaspiysk, and Khasavyurt avoid drinking tap water. The restriction increased demand for bottled water. According to Magnit, the only federal food retail chain in the republic, water supplies to Dagestan tripled, reaching 70 tons per day.

As of April 3, 43,000 people had applied for financial assistance. According to the press service of the republic’s administration, compensation to flood victims will cost the Dagestan budget 4 billion rubles.

Head of the republic Sergey Melikov announced the possibility of declaring an interregional state of emergency to strengthen coordination of assistance.

Heavy rains resumed on the night of April 4. More than 1,000 homes were flooded again, and a three-story building adjacent to a multi-story residential building at 6 Perova Street in Makhachkala collapsed. On April 5, the earthen dam of the Gedzhukh reservoir in the Derbent district was destroyed. Strong floodwaters swept away several cars on the highway between the villages of Mammadkala and Gedzhukh and flooded homes in villages downstream of the reservoir.

According to Yuri Chaika, the Presidential Envoy of Russia for the North Caucasus Federal District, the total material damage caused by the natural disaster in Dagestan and Chechnya is estimated at over 1 billion rubles.

Heavy precipitation is forecast again in Dagestan from April 9 to 14.
