Baku-APA. Five suspected militants, two of them in suicide belts with the total power equivalent of five kg of TNT, have been killed in a special operation in Nazran, the largest town in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, the National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC) reported on Tuesday, APA reports quoting RIA Novosti.

“Law enforcers tried to stop a car with suspected militants but they opened fire on special forces officers. As a result of the shootout that followed, five bandits were killed,” the NAC said.

“Homemade explosive devices, booby-trapped suicide belts, were discovered on the bodies of two of them - a man and a woman. Their total power, according to specialists, was about 5 kg of TNT,” it said.

Sporadic terrorist attacks and militant clashes are common in Russia’s mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia. Russia has been fighting militants in the North Caucasus for over a decade, including two separatist wars in Chechnya.
