Including non-citizens previously based in Austria the tally rises to 20 deaths, while a further eight citizens are currently participating in the conflict "on the side of terrorist groups," the Ministry stated, according to a Der Standard newspaper report.

In total about 100 people have travelled from Austria to Syria to take part in the conflict, the Interior Ministry said, the majority of whom are not Austrian citizens. About 40 of those people are believed to have since returned.

About half of the total number have Chechen roots, Der Standard stated, with other common backgrounds being Bosnian, Kurdish, and Turkish.

In order to tackle the issue, the Austrian government has planned a tightening of its citizenship law, whereby citizens participating in combat operations for an armed group abroad can have their citizenship revoked if they do not become stateless as a result.

Border controls are also expected to be tightened to restrict the departure of minors who could come under threat from related activities.
