The Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan said Azerbaijani investors are interested in the agricultural sector and described a railway freight terminal as essential for transit and economic cooperation between the two countries, noting that work is underway on its establishment, APA's Tehran bureau reports.
Speaking at a meeting with Ardabil Governor Masoud Emami Yegane, Iran's Ambassador to Baku Mojtaba Demirchilou said investors from both countries are interested in investing in various sectors, particularly agriculture.
He noted that the issue of establishing a railway freight terminal will be followed up in Baku as part of this process.
The ambassador added that, taking into account the existing commonalities between Ardabil Province and the Republic of Azerbaijan, various issues related to economic, cultural and transit cooperation will be discussed with the Azerbaijani side and kept on the agenda.
Ardabil Governor Masoud Emami Yegane also addressed ways to expand political, economic, cultural and transit cooperation between the province and Azerbaijan during the meeting. He said Ardabil Province shares the longest common border with the Republic of Azerbaijan and that expanding economic, cultural and transit cooperation with the country is among the province's priorities.
The governor described the launch of the logistics railway terminal as beneficial for both sides, adding that Azerbaijan has always approached Iran as a neighboring country on the basis of friendship. According to him, the commissioning of the railway terminal will increase the volume of imports and exports between the two sides.
It should be noted that, in accordance with an agreement reached between the presidents of Iran and Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani railway line will be extended to Parsabad in Iranian territory and, in the future, will be connected to Iran's national railway network via the Ardabil–Parsabad railway.
With the implementation of this project and the construction of the Parsabad terminal, the area will become a hub for the collection and transportation of export and transit cargo from Iran and other countries in the region. Ardabil Province shares approximately 380 kilometers of border with the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Bilasuvar customs checkpoint is the province's only active border crossing.
