A technical agreement for Azerbaijan's accession to the NATO Maritime Security Centre of Excellence (DGMM/MARSEC COE) has been signed, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense (MND) said, APA's Istanbul correspondent reports.
It was stated the document was signed by the representatives from the DGMM sponsor countries – Türkiye, Portugal, Romania, Greece, and Azerbaijan.
“With this arrangement (document), the Azerbaijani flag will fly at the NATO Maritime Security Centre of Excellence, and Azerbaijani personnel will permanently serve at the center.”
About NATO Maritime Security Centre of Excellence
It is one of NATO's specialized research and training centers in the field of maritime security. These Centres of Excellence (COEs) are established by NATO allied countries and aim to provide support to the alliance in both military and strategic areas.
The main functions of the center:
- Enhancing maritime security – develops strategies and guidelines to increase the safety of maritime operations.
- Research and analysis – investigates maritime threats and risks, providing recommendations to NATO countries.
- Training and education programs – conducts training for NATO and partner countries' naval forces.
- International cooperation – collaborates with allied and partner countries on maritime security issues.
Location and Organization of the Center
The NATO Maritime Security Centre of Excellence officially began its operations in March 2023 in Istanbul, Türkiye. The center was established under the initiative of the Turkish Naval Forces and is a specialized entity approved by NATO.
This center serves the development of knowledge and expertise in maritime security within NATO and offers effective solutions to address the increasing maritime risks in the modern era.
