Baku-APA. Egyptian Foreign Minister Muhammad Kamel Amrin a phone call with IRI Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Velayati Friday night surveyed and consulted latest developments in Syrian crisis, APA reports.

According to IRNA Friday night news team, the Information and Media Head Office of the IRI Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported late Friday night that the call was made following the Syria’s Friends Conference in Tehran and the Islamic Republic of Iran’s proposal for the establishment of a contact group regarding the Syrian developments.

The other factor leading to regular consultations between the two major Islamic countries’ top diplomats, according to the IRI Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi’s proposal at Mecca OIC Summit on activities and cooperation of four countries of Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey regarding regional crisis solving, thus far the foreign ministers of Iran and Egypt have twice exchanged ideas with each other.

Ties between the two countries - both among the largest and most influential in the Middle East were severed in 1980 following Iran’s Islamic Revolution and Egypt’s recognition of Israel. Egypt is the only Arab country not to have an embassy in Iran today.

After bilateral visits following the 2011 Egyptian revolution, and the appointment of ambassadors after nearly 30 years, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi is now scheduled to make an historic first visit to Iran since the Islamic revolution for the Non-Aligned Movement’s summit on 30 August, where it will hand over the rotating presidency to Iran.
