Baku-APA. Two Asian tourists were dead after they tried to cross a river near New Zealand South Island’s Franz Josef Glacier in the dark on Frdiay night, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Police in Franz Josef said in a statement on Saturday that a 20-year-old Chinese woman and a 23-year-old woman from Malaysia were part of a group of four on a walking track near the glacier on Friday.

The group tried to cross the Waiho River on foot at about 9.30 p.m. but the two women were swept off their feet and washed downstream.

The two other tourists of the group walked out and raised the alarm.

A rescue helicopter later found the two bodies in the Waiho River.

No further details were being released until the next of kin have been notified.
