Senior U.S. diplomat to attend Bonn conference on Afghanistan

Baku-APA. A senior U.S. diplomat on women’ s issues will attend the international Afghanistan conference due to be held in Bonn, Germany, the State Department announced on Saturday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Melanne Verveer, U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, will travel to Bonn from Saturday to Monday to attend the international Afghanistan conference, State Department said in a statement.

In Bonn, Verveer will deliver remarks at a press conference regarding the critical role of women to the future stability and security in Afghanistan, said the statement.

She will also meet with Afghan civil society leaders and government officials and will participate in multiple events focused on the "central role of Afghan women leaders socially, politically, and economically to Afghanistan’s future", according to the statement.

Following the trip to Bonn, Verveer will go to Durban, South Africa to participate in the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change from Tuesday to Thursday.

The Bonn conference on Afghanistan is scheduled to be held on Monday to discuss the post withdrawal Afghanistan and possibility of talks with Taliban. However, Pakistan, a critical player in Afghanistan’s future, has decided to boycott the conference in protest to a recent NATO air strike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.
