Baku-APA. Two Iraqi soldiers were gunned down and four others were injured by unidentified assailants in northern Iraq late on Tuesday, a local police source said, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

A vehicle carrying Iraqi soldiers were attacked by gunmen on Tuesday afternoon in Sharqat area, some 110 km north of Tikrit, the hometown of former leader Saddam Hussein, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Two soldiers were shot dead at the scene instantly and four others were wounded, two seriously, the source said.

The victims have been sent to nearby hospitals and the assailants fled the scene, he added.

Earlier in the day, a member of the Sunni paramilitary group " the Awakening Council" was assassinated by unidentified gunmen in Tarmeah area, 30 km north of Baghdad, another police source anonymously told Xinhua.

The Awakening Council became a frequent target of attacks after it cooperated with U.S. and Iraqi forces to curb al-Qaida and other extremists after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
