Baku-APA. Thousands of Bahraini citizens gathered Saturday in the capital Manama to show support to the Bahraini government and opposition to foreign interference, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The peaceful rally, which was organized by pro-government National Unity Assembly (NUA), gathered thousands of Sunni Bahrainis waving national flags in the Riffa area of Manama.

Chairman of the NUA Shaikh Abdullateef Al Mahmood delivered a speech at the gathering, talking about the regional situation and calling on the Bahrainis to unite against foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs.

"Internal and external forces are working for their own agenda. Our national role demands us to unite and fight against this," Al Mahmood said, "I would also like to mention here that medical and trade union activities should not be politicized."

The NUA has been pushing for several issues such as housing, corruption and unemployment.

Bahrain has been rocked since February by a series of anti- government protests that has claimed over 30 lives. The country is scheduled to hold by-election on Sept. 24 for 18 seats left vacant by parliament members from the largest opposition group Al Wefaq National Islamic Society, who resigned in protest against the alleged killing of anti-government protestors.
