Baku-APA. Visiting Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met with top Egyptian officials Wednesday to discuss regional and international efforts to revive peace in Middle East and the latest developments of the Palestinian UN bid, official news agency MENA reported.

Head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Hussien Tantawi together with Chief of Staff Sami Annan met with Abbas and exchanged views on Palestinian issues. Abbas thanked the SCAF and the Egyptian government for their key roles in Palestinian reconciliation.

Egyptian Intelligence Chief Mourad Muwafi also met with Abbas and they discussed the mechanism of the Arab efforts on UN General Assembly later this month to support the Palestinian bid for a full UN membership.

According to MENA, Abbas said he believed that heading to the UN didn’t mean that the Palestinian people were against peace talks. They were doing so because there was no negotiation going on, he said.

The Palestine wasn’t seeking to isolate Israel and didn’t want to be dragged into confrontation with the U.S., he added.

In an interview with Egyptian media Wednesday, Abbas said that going to the UN was not a unilateral action. It was an Arab decision and couldn’t be backtracked, he added.
