The accident happened between Arakkonam and Chiteri, 80 km from Chennai at 9:30 p.m. local time (1600 GMT). An EMU train hit the rear of another stationary passenger train at a signal point near Arakkonam, causing three carriages derailed.
At least 15 passengers are feared killed and 17 are critically injured. Many others are still trapped under the debris, according to the report.
More than 100 police officials and firemen have rushed to the scene, and naval personnel also joined the rescue work. But heavy rain and darkness are hampering the rescue effort.
