Baku – APA. The United Nations refugee agency says twice as many Afghan refugees are leaving Pakistan and Iran to return to Afghanistan this year than in 2009, APA reports quoting “The Voice of America”.
The UNHCR said Friday that the number of people voluntarily returning has already exceeded 100,000, the vast majority of them coming from Pakistan.
The agency said interviews with refugees indicated that most returned because of economic reasons, difficulties in Pakistan and improving security in their home country.
About 70 percent of the repatriated Afghans come from the northwestern province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan, which has been devastated by weeks of flooding.
The UNHCR said it is in discussions with officials to try and rehabilitate flood-damaged refugee villages in Pakistan.
