Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency: Peaceful nuclear program is the right of the people of Iran and we will continue this project – INTERVIEW
- What steps will Iran take against the probability of Israel’s bombing Bushehr nuclear power plant and such kind of threats?
- In 1990 at the conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency Iran made a proposal to ban an armed attack or a threat of armed attack on nuclear facilities. This proposal was put to the vote as resolution #533 and adopted unanimously. The resolution bans an armed attack or a threat of armed attack on a nuclear facility, in operation or under construction. If it happens, serious reaction must be given to the violator. In 2009 – 20 years later Iran again made a proposal on the validity of the decision banning attack on the nuclear facilities. This proposal was adopted unanimously again. If there is any attack on the nuclear facilities, the violator will be condemned on the international level and recognized as criminal. We support peace. We do not say it as a slogan. We show to the whole world in action that we are peace loving. No country can attack on Iran, because all know us. Attack on Iran is an illusion, they want to tense the situation in the region. They will not achieve it. The sanctions adopted against Iran will not be effective. The Israeli regime is the only government that violated the laws on the international level in 1981 and bombed the nuclear reactor near Baghdad. There hasn’t been another country that violated the laws on the international level. Therefore, in 1982 Israel was condemned by the International Atomic Energy Agency and dismissed from membership for a ten-year term. Peace loving people of the world must know these laws and unanimously prevent these crimes.
- Will Iran exceed 20 percent in developing uranium enrichment?
- We will not exceed 20 percent in developing uranium enrichment and we don’t say anything about that because we don’t need in it. We submitted an official document to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about 20 percent enrichment and then we started development of this facility. We needed to use it in medicine, in exploitation of Bushehr nuclear power plant and nuclear research center in Tehran. We carried out only 20 percent enrichment because we have no other way. IAEA has 24-hour control over the Iran’s uranium enrichment facility and Bushehr nuclear power plant. Everything is transparent. We need in 20 nuclear power plants like Bushehr. President Mahmoud Ahadinejad also stressed that. International law doesn’t forbid uranium enrichment and every country has a legal right to develop it.
- Will Iran go to negotiations with Group of Six and IAEA? Do you expect any response from them?
- In our latest letter to IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano, we expressed willingness to meet with Vienna Group (USA, France and Russia) without pre-conditions. We would like Turkey and Brazil, parts of Tehran agreement, to join these meetings. Iran never avoids discussions and meetings based on logic, but we don’t accept discussions and meetings based on threats and forces. We are fulfilling all commitments. We expect from the Group of Six and IAEA not to allow injustice toward Iran.
