Baku-APA. A 7.5-magnitude earthquake rocked the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu Tuesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, APA reports quoting upi.com website.
The quake’s epicenter was about 24 miles west-northwest of Port-Vila, Vanuatu’s capital, and about 1,174 miles east-northeast of Brisbane, Australia, the USGS said.
Reports from Port Vila indicated residents remained on higher ground as aftershocks rumbled after the quake, Radio New Zealand reported. Witnesses told RNZ the quake shook goods off shelves, forcing many shops in town to close early. There were no immediate reports of major structural damage.
Geoscience Australia said the quake, 24 miles from the main island of Efate, was at a depth of 21 miles.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a warning.
