Baku-APA. The worst floods to hit Pakistan in 80 years are flowing south, forcing more than a half million people to flee their homes, APA reports quoting voanews.com website.

The nearly two-week disaster has affected at least four million people in the country and killed more than 1,500. Floodwaters that have already devastated Pakistan’s northwest are now moving into southern Sindh province, as heavy monsoon rains continue.

Authorities say 11 districts are at risk of flooding in Sindh, where more than 500,000 people have been evacuated. Rising water levels have washed away homes, roads, and bridges, cutting off entire communities. Boats and helicopters were being used to rescue stranded villagers, but many residents say they have yet to receive help or much-needed relief supplies.

The government response has prompted anger among Pakistanis, who are also criticizing President Asif Ali Zardari’s decision to travel to Europe during the floods. Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has visited many flood-affected areas and the country’s disaster management authority says initial relief and rescue efforts were hampered by poor weather conditions.

The flooding has destroyed crops and farmland in Punjab province and other areas, heightening fears of a food shortage. The United Nations has been working to provide emergency food assistance to thousands of flood victims.

U.S. military helicopters have been helping hundreds evacuate from areas cut off by floodwaters.

The U.S. has pledged $35 million in relief aid.
