Baku-APA. Israeli police injure five Palestinians among the protesters decrying Tel Aviv’s plans to destroy a crowded Arab neighborhood to build a park, APA reports quoting presstv.ir website.

Around 200 demonstrators took part in the Tuesday demonstration in protest at the project that calls for razing of 22 Arab-residing homes in East al-Quds (Jerusalem), AFP reported.

The police shot the ralliers with tear gas canisters and rubber bullets and placed one participant under arrest.

As part of the West Bank, Israel captured East al-Quds in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it in a move not recognized by the international community.

The regime has also been dimming the prospects of peace ever since by building in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Claiming to be respecting a Palestinian demand, Tel Aviv imposed a self-proclaimed freeze on its construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank last year. It, however, regularly violated the pledge, causing the United States-brokered “indirect peace" talks between the two sides to fail.

Al-Bustan, the construction site for the so-called archeological park, is a section of the larger neighborhood of Silwan, which is home to some 50,000 Palestinians and 70 Israeli families.

Palestinians say the project is another attempt by Tel Aviv to cement its claim to all of al-Quds, adding that it is impossible for Palestinians to obtain building permits.

Acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas, meanwhile, has urged Washington to pressure Israel to stop the plan.

The building project has also been denounced by the United Nations, which has said it is in breach of international law.
