Azerbaijan Ashugs Union faces scandal

Baku. Ulkar Gasimovaâ€“APA. Azerbaijan Ashugs Union will hold its VI Congress at the Iranian Cultural Center on August 21. The Unionâ€™s chairwoman Zumrud Mammadova told APA the new chair would be elected at the congress. They will discuss works to be done for including the Azerbaijan ashug art in UNESCO Heritage list and development of this art.
Mammadova said there were some problems related to the congress. â€œThe Ministry of Culture and Tourism will convene the congress of our union on August 29. The Ashugs Union is non-governmental organization and the ministry canâ€™t convene its congress. I am working free for this organization for many years. Now they heard that UNESCO will allocate resources and decided to interfere in our workâ€.
Mammadova said after their address to the president the Ashugs Union received three rooms in the former building of Turkish embassy.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has officially announced on Wednesday that the ashugsâ€™ next congress would be held on August 29 at the Azerbaijan State Musical Comedy Theater. The congress will discuss the tasks for protection and development of ashug art, strengthening of ashugsâ€™ creative organization, current and prospective duties, support for Azerbaijan ashug art to be included in UNESCO Heritage list and other issues.
