The president of Venezuela's National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, said on Monday that the number of people killed in the earthquakes has reached at least 1,719, while 5,034 people have been injured and 15,866 have been displaced, APA reports.
The Venezuelan lawmaker revealed that the government has documented 855 buildings destroyed across the country, while 189 of them suffered "total collapse." He added that the government is creating two commissions, with one evaluating the damage to buildings and the other overseeing the temporary shelter camps.
Rodriguez also stated that Venezuela suffered over 600 aftershocks following last week's earthquakes, but noted that electricity has been restored to 90% of La Guaira, the northern area which was hit the hardest in the quakes.
