German Chancellor thanks President for creating conditions to increase gas supplies from Azerbaijan

“We have not been buying gas from Russia for four and a half years, and we are not signing new contracts,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said at a joint press conference with President Ilham Aliyev, APA's correspondent dispatched to Berlin reports.

The German Chancellor said Azerbaijan plays an important role in this regard.

“I would like to thank President Ilham Aliyev for creating the conditions for us to receive more gas supplies from Azerbaijan. In the coming years, we want to further intensify our cooperation, particularly in the field of energy supply. As Germany, we have a strong interest in diversifying our imports, especially natural gas imports. I also mentioned this in my opening remarks. Azerbaijan is one of the few countries in the region with an energy surplus, meaning it produces more energy than it consumes. In this regard, Azerbaijan is an important partner for us in ensuring Germany’s energy supply. This is particularly true for southern Germany, as the infrastructure to those regions already exists or can be expanded. Therefore, this was a very interesting discussion and opened new prospects for cooperation between Azerbaijan and Germany,” Merz said.

Merz added that increasing gas supplies from Azerbaijan to Germany was discussed during his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev.

“Of course, we are looking for new sources of supply. In this regard, Azerbaijan plays an important role for us. This is an interesting prospect for us from an economic point of view. We have also explored and put into operation other sources of supply. This issue is also part of our joint agreement and will remain one of the main topics of our future negotiations with Azerbaijan.”
